Health and HIV/AIDS
Generally, the level of awareness about key hygiene and sanitation practices is low in the community.
There is the grave danger of pollution posed to both surface and ground water sources as a result of this poor human waste disposal. Deaths occurred in villages where labour turns deadly causing deaths of both mother and child. Due to the distance of the health faculties available children under 5 years around the community do not access immunization in time or some are not immunized at all while others may default due to the long distances. Local awareness-levels surrounding HIV/AIDS are at 87.6%, which is relatively low compared to the national awareness level of 99%. The HIV prevalence rate stands at 23.6%, which is quite high in comparison to the national rate of 4.9%. PLHIV/TB clients default from taking ARV and TB/drugs due to distance of the health facilities. Because of numerous problems most PLWHAs end up dying earlier due to depression and suffering leaving a number of orphans behind. New HIV/AIDS infections from mother to child during childbirth when women have unskilled attendants (TBAs)present at every birth. KAWODEP has been able to help curb these challenges by:
- Reduce preventable diseases by raising community level of awareness about key hygiene and sanitation practices, provision of slabs, installing roof catchment water tanks and bringing quality health care services closer to the people
- Enroll and link OVC households to National HospitalInsurance Fund and refer them for clinical treatment.
- Organizing annual sporting (recreation) events to OVC, Provide sexual and reproductive health education to young women who have inadequate access to such information.
- Provide emotional, psychological, spiritual, trauma and support counseling, especially after bereavement. Adult beneficiaries are encouraged to access HIV/AIDS Counseling and Testing (HCT) services. HIV Counseling and Testing is a key sexual behaviour change strategy.
- Raise awareness, and imparting knowledge about risk factors and appropriate sexual behavior, emphasizing on abstinence and faithfulness, with the aim of reducing HIV/AIDS and STI infection rates. KAWODEP also advocate and refer for PMTCT, HCT and VMMC. Promote correct and consistent condom use among youth between the ages of 15-18 and their caregivers (general population).
